When I was younger I was always was accurately accused of daydreaming all day. I daydreamed about future endeavors, going on adventures, what my wedding would be like, and of course, how my future spouse and I would do things to give each other a super special Valentine’s Day. I have always loved Valentine’s Day. Except, of course, after my first break up. That was the worst. If you’re there right now, know that I feel you and more importantly, it gets better!
Thankfully I’m past that stage and I’m in a pretty nice relationship with my fine Chinese boyfriend. As amazing as he is, he informed me a couple months into our relationship that he never celebrated Valentine’s Day before. He never celebrated while he was in America or China. I promptly made it clear that where I am from we never omit opportunities to celebrate, and we certainly would not be skipping holidays, especially not Valentine’s Day. In all reality, I was happy to be the first one to introduce him to the holiday of love. So we both opened Pinterest to search for some of the sweetest ideas out there. Keep reading to see some of the best DIY romantic Valentine’s Day Ideas.

Start of Valentine’s Day right by preparing your loved ones their favorite foods shaped into hearts. With today’s fancy cookware, it’s possible to make everything from pancakes to eggs heart shaped with minimal effort. (I’m so into minimal effort things). Go a step further with the pancakes, and make heart-shaped red velvet pancakes. Having a sweet and special breakfast sets the mood for a sweet and special day.
Pictures arranged in a heart shape on your wall
My boyfriend surprised me with this last year and I’m still so in love with it. Get some pictures from your phone developed (he got 18), and arrange them on the wall in the shape of a heart. It’s such a sweet, simple gesture that symbolizes a thoughtfulness and love. This gesture helped me to have a super special Valentine’s Day, and I am sure it wil make your extra special too.
Instax Camera to always snap and keep wallet-sized memories
Another cute way to do this would be to use an Instax Camera. Snap pictures of special memories in the making and they’ll print out of the camera instantly. Secretly collect them, and when it comes time for Valentine’s Day, surprise your loved one with a collage, scrapbook, or heart-shaped wall design, of all of the cherished memories you’ve made together.
Handmade/homemade gifts are really the gifts that get to be called priceless. Time, effort, and love are all represented when you give your loved ones knitted hats, gloves, scarves, etc. Sewing, crocheting, and whatever other forms of handmaking items works too!
Bless my boyfriend’s heart, though he never celebrated Valentine’s Day before, he rocked it with me! Last year my boyfriend surprised me with strawberries cut into the shape of roses. This incredibly sweet and creative gesture is a way to show the person you love that you care about the details. You could even add chocolate to the strawberries to make it more romantic.
Dress and Shoes
Who doesn’t love to dress up and go out for a nice date occasionally? You can get your girl a pretty dress and a nice pair of shoes, take her to get her to get her nails done and give her some time to get ready for a date at 7 pm. This is one of the sweetest ideas I can think of! (Hint to my boyfriend, if he’s reading this). Ladies, you can do this for your guy too. Get him a nice suit or a nice tie with a nice pair of dress shoes, and take him out for a nice date. Though guys won’t ever admit it, they actually like to dress up and go out too.
Decorate with Balloons, Rose Petals, and Candles
Surprise your loved one with a room full of balloons. Get different kinds of balloons, like ones that say sweet things, heart-shaped ones, mixed colored ones, etc. Balloons can be super romantic and a pleasant surprise. They represent celebration. Let your loved ones know you are celebrating them. Add rose petals to the mix to give it a sweet and romantic flare. Candles add even more to the sweet and romantic mood Valentine’s Day is meant to bring.
Put to together a sweet scrapbook of memories you and loved one shared. Check your drawers for old ticket stubs, photos, and sticky notes to add to your scrapbook. Fill it in with sweet sayings, stories, descriptions, and memories. This is another instance where an Instax Camera would come in super handy!
Write out a long sweet love letter to your loved one to let them know how you feel about them. Sometimes after you’ve been with someone for a long time, it’s like you forget the need to tell them you love them. I’m soo guilty of this (my boyfriend is too). But it’s okay. Valentine’s Day is a great reminder to remind your loved ones of how much you love them.
You have to be in love with an animal person for this to work. But if your guy, girl, or even children are begging for a furry companion, this is a great time to break down and give them a sweet furry surprise. Alternative ideas include taking a trip to the local animal shelter or getting a cute stuffed animal. This gift would definitely make for a super special Valentine’s Day
Plan a Surprise Getaway
I’ve been waiting for this to happen to me my entire life (another hint to my sweet boyfriend), and it probably will when my guy and I aren’t broke college students. So if you aren’t a broke college student, this may be a viable option for you.
Plan a surprise getaway for you and your special person. For this one, really you can just do what you can afford. If you can afford a Sandal’s Resort Vacation, go for it! If you can afford a trip to DC, go for it. You know your budget, and you know what you and your partner enjoy doing. Unveiling special plans for a getaway on Valentine’s Day is one of the best ideas for a super special Valentine’s Day.
Scavenger hunts are not just for kids. Create a sweet scavenger hunt around your house, or even around town with sweet clues. This would definitely take some effort and planning on your part, but it would be super sweet, creative, and an exciting way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
For You, By Me, Books seem to be the Valentine’s Day gift of the year. Every person that I have talked to that has got these books has liked them. I got one for my guy, and I love it. There are so many different booklet options. All of them can be filled out with love and uniqueness. On this post, I list out the different books like “Why you’re my hero“, “What I Love About You” etc.
Scratch of Map
This is the sweetest idea, especially if you’re a couple who likes to travel a lot. Get one of these scratch-off maps and scratch off the places that you’ve been to together. Hang it up somewhere and as you keep traveling, keep scratching places off. This would go great with the getaway idea!
*An alternative would be to print off a map from online (or if you have mad drawing skills draw it yourself). And use four different colors. One for the places your loved one’s been, one for where you’ve been, one for where you’ve both been at different times, and one where you’ve both been together. For the not so artsy people or time-crunched people (like me), just buying one is probably the more viable option.
Cheesecake is like thee dessert of romance. My boyfriend got me a decked-out cheesecake for Valentine’s Day last year, and I loved it! Get the special person in your life a delicious and decorated cheesecake of their favorite flavor.
Heart shaped baked goods
If your person doesn’t do cheesecake, there are a plethora of other dessert options. Get a heart-shaped cake, or make heart-shaped cookies or brownies, or other baked goods you know they do like.
I so hope you enjoyed this list of creative ideas for a romantic and super special Valentine’s Day. If you’re still in search of gift ideas for your man, check out my this post! Feel free to share some of your ideas below, I’m always collecting ideas for my guy.
